I am fully retired now, with a vast portfolio of sketches and other illustrations just aching for a healthy dose of “photoshopping”. Trouble is, the application itself is not at all intuitive and their online how-to’s leave a lot to be desired. PhotoShop is one daunting exercise.

Enter Lea’s book: following the author’s step-by-step lessons, the mysteries of PS suddenly become the wonders of PS. There are precious few

tasks I find too challenging now.

This book has been a heaven-send. The final chapter challenges the readers to duplicate the cover art. I had other notions of a clever morphing, Obama’s tentacles in banking and GM. I thought it was artistic, actually quite appropriate, but I will not publish it for fear of getting visited by the Secret Service.

All in all, this is an excellent, but not thorough review of PhotoShop capablities. For instance, tasks of editing detailed photos is given short-shrift. However, this book will carry a reader to the point of competency, understanding PhotoShop to the degree that photo illustration manuals will make sense.

Lea’s publisher sent me a copy of this book some time ago, and it’s just now that I feel confident writing the review. Considering that I use Photoshop CS2, I was a bit skeptical that I’d find any use for this particular volume. I’m happy to have been proven wrong.

Lea, as always, makes some of the most difficult techniques in Photoshop approachable for the amateur and developing expert as well. He goes into enough detail that even advanced CS3 and CS4 tools can be understood by CS2 users and replicated without the pricey software (smart masks would be fun to have, but I can live without them).

I also own the version of the book targeted at Photoshop CS3. Much of the material is replicated across the two volumes, but the material Lea has added in the new version more than justifies the cover price. My favorite chapter was the one on creating faux screenprint designs. I’ve always been a fan of traditional screenprint art and being able to include the same style in my own work has been truly gratifying.

The final chapter with its art-generation contest is unique. I’ve always admired Lea’s grasp on his user community, but inviting this kind of interaction and feedback is something I have yet to see from any other author.

I would recommend Creative Photoshop for any advanced or new user of any version of Photoshop without any reservations. It’s helped my art and would be a great addition to anyone’s toolbox.
